What happens when 988 is contacted
The Lifeline states that a caller first hears service options, including the Veterans Crisis Line by pressing 1 and Spanish-language support by pressing 2. The caller is then connected to a counselor who asks about immediate safety, listens, provides support and may identify relevant resources. Text and online chat are also available.
If telephone privacy is limited, text 988 or use the chat service at 988lifeline.org. A person who is deaf or hard of hearing can review the service’s current accessibility options on the same site.
If you are helping someone else
- Ask directly whether the person is in immediate danger or is thinking about suicide. Do not promise secrecy.
- Stay with the person or remain connected while urgent help is contacted, when it is safe to do so.
- Call 911 for immediate danger. Call or text 988 for crisis counseling and guidance.
- In Travis County, call Integral Care at 512-472-4357 for local crisis support and service access.
- Follow the crisis professional’s instructions. Do not rely on email, a therapist’s ordinary voicemail or this website for an urgent response.
Routine therapy and crisis care are not interchangeable
Many outpatient therapists do not provide continuous telephone coverage, emergency assessment, mobile response or hospital-level care. Their practice policies should state how urgent needs are handled outside appointments. If symptoms escalate while waiting for a routine consultation, use an urgent service rather than waiting for the appointment.
Information checked July 19, 2026. Crisis locations and procedures can change. The numbers 911 and 988 should be used according to the situation; call Integral Care to confirm local service details.
